In the Word Wednesday: Genesis 19

Hello Everyone!

What a glorious morning! The sun is shining again and the grass is green. God is good!

Today in Genesis my study takes me to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and Lot being saved again by Abraham's faith to God.

Wow, where do I begin? This chapter is heavy and as I read in The Reformation Bible Study to get little background, I find that it is a custom in the ancient Near Eastern to show hospitality to guest, both Abraham and Lot demonstrate this by bowing down and taking them to their homes. Lot goes even farther to protect them. The Sodomites were demonstrating the opposite. They were trying to force their way into the home to "get at" the visitors. Can we say Evil was knocking at the door. I do believe so, maybe that is where the phrase came from.

Also, I learned that the reason Lot was a Gate Keeper was that he was a respected member of the community and legal matters were decided at the city gate by community "Elders" such as Lot. Interesting that he didn't follow their ways yet was "respected". Again, maybe his being saved had more to do with Abraham then Lot himself. However, he did show himself to be righteous by pleading for the town to be saved. Also, his status in the community may have been due to his great wealth and Abraham's rescue of the city.

I have also learned that there is an area near the Dead Sea that has deposits of sulfur and asphalt which seem to come from the described destroyed city as it was described. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. Again, we see Lot being saved had more to do with Abraham then with Lot in verse 29: So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived. As far as Lot's wife, not much is said. She was disobedient and dealt with, end of story. The account goes on with the daughter's acting unseemingly. Their lineage turns out to be a bitter people that treat Israel badly and God ultimately rejects them because of their behavior, aw but that's for another day. 😉

Wow, that was a mouthful.

That was lot to digest.  Have a read if you like here
I feel the need to reflect on my behavior and my heart in all matters. Even the smallest things. I need to be more like Abraham(faithful) and less like Lot or at least Lot's wife. I know I would be the one to look back. How about you? What do think?
I don't think these pictures even touch on what was happening.

I don't think I want to make a picture of this one. My emotions would get the better of me.

As for now, have a great day! See you tomorrow for Throwback Thursday!
